General Paper (GP) is a compulsory H1 subject for all JC students. GP develops students' ability to think critically, construct cogent arguments, and communicate their ideas in clear, accurate language. While a good command of English is essential, GP is more than a language paper – students learn to analyse current affairs and societal trends, then formulate informed opinions on what these issues mean for the individual and society.
Each term covers specific themes, supported by thematic resource packages of articles, case studies, and videos that build students' content knowledge and sharpen their critical examination of the issues. Alongside this, students develop the thinking and writing skills needed for both Paper 1 and Paper 2.
To build a strong interest in current affairs, teachers run current affairs lessons and quizzes to keep students abreast of local and global news. Students are also encouraged to take learning beyond the classroom through college-based enrichment activities such as Brown Bag discussions and GP Day, as well as external opportunities like the Pre-University Seminar, learning journeys, conferences, and seminars.
Learning is collaborative: through group discussions and class presentations, students co-construct meaning from their knowledge and experiences, while learning to respect different perspectives and value their peers' contributions. Regular written assignments balance assessment for and of learning, keeping students engaged, motivated, and confident in their progress.
General Paper ultimately prepares students to develop their own distinct voices as they make sense of an increasingly complex world.
